This December, we embarked on a journey to Morocco a land of rich culture, breathtaking landscapes, and intricate craftsmanship. For us, it wasn't just a trip; it was an opportunity to connect with the artisans and traditions that breathe life into our creations. This trip was particularly special, as it marked our return to Morocco after six years. It was also the first time we brought our daughter along, making it a profoundly meaningful experience, especially since she was conceived there. The long gap in our visits was due to the challenges posed by COVID-19, which made it impossible for us to travel sooner.

Arrival in Marrakech: A Sensory Feast

Our journey began in Marrakech, a city that feels like a kaleidoscope of sights, sounds, and scents. Wandering through the medina, we were immersed in the vibrant colors of spice stalls, the hum of artisans at work, and the aroma of freshly baked bread. Each alleyway seemed to tell its own story, and the energy of the city was truly contagious.

But our focus was clear: to visit the skilled artisans whose hands bring our visions to life. We spent days exploring workshops, meeting weavers, and understanding their techniques. Every piece they create carries generations of knowledge, and their dedication to their craft is nothing short of inspiring.

The M'rirt Workshop: A Celebration of Craftsmanship

From Marrakech, we rented a car and drove up north to Khenifra to visit the weavers. The journey took us through winding mountain roads and picturesque landscapes, a beautiful prelude to what awaited us. Khenifra is home to the M'rirt workshops, where the magic happens. Watching the artisans at work was a humbling experience. Their expertise, attention to detail, and passion for their craft reminded us why we do what we do.

During this trip, I also learned that it is not only very important to have the weavers but equally crucial to have the men who work on the burning, washing, and drying processes. This part of the craft is incredibly demanding and requires immense strength and dedication. Their hard work ensures that every rug meets the highest standards of quality and beauty.

One of the most memorable moments was seeing our five-year-old daughter’s artwork turned into a rug. We watched as the women worked meticulously on it, bringing her creation to life. It was a special moment for our daughter, seeing her imagination transformed by these skilled hands. It reinforced our commitment to nurturing creativity and inspired us to continue collaborating with young artists for our Artistry Underfoot collection.

We also hope to return to Morocco more often in the future, strengthening our ties with the artisans and their craft.

The Beauty of Collaboration

One of the most rewarding aspects of this trip was the collaboration. It’s not just about creating beautiful pieces; it’s about building relationships and fostering a shared appreciation for artistry. The artisans’ input was invaluable, and we left with a renewed sense of purpose and a collection we are immensely proud of.

The Inspiration Behind Our New Collection

This trip didn’t just influence the designs; it deepened our connection to the stories behind each piece. The intricate patterns reflect the rich storytelling tradition of the region, while the carefully chosen tones draw inspiration from the serene, earthy landscapes we encountered on our journey. Each rug is a blend of tradition and modernity, designed for those who appreciate authenticity and timeless beauty.

Looking Ahead

As we return home and prepare to share this collection with you, we are filled with gratitude. Gratitude for the artisans who welcomed us into their world, for the rich cultural heritage of Morocco, and for the opportunity to bring these stories into your homes.

Stay tuned as we unveil our latest collection. We hope these pieces bring as much warmth and inspiration to your space as this journey brought to us.

Thank you for joining us on this adventure. Here's to celebrating craftsmanship, tradition, and the stories that connect us all.
